How to choose a water treatment company
Start with a water test, not a product. City water and private wells have different needs, and a good company will tell you if you don't need much. Get two or three written quotes so you can compare equipment, price and upkeep side by side.
8 questions to ask before you buy
- What exactly will this system remove or reduce, and which independent certification (for example NSF/ANSI 42, 44, 53, 55, 58 or 401) covers that claim for this specific model?
- Will you test my water first, and will I get the results in writing?
- Is this sized to my home's flow rate, plumbing and number of bathrooms?
- What is the total installed price, including permits, bypass valve and any plumbing changes?
- What ongoing maintenance does it need (filters, media, salt, membranes), how often, and what does that cost per year?
- What warranty covers the equipment, and what covers the labor? Who honors it?
- Are you licensed and insured for plumbing work in my area?
- Can I see a written quote with the brand and model numbers before I commit?
Red flags
- Pressure to sign the same day or "today-only" pricing.
- Health claims about what the water will do for you, rather than which contaminants a certified product reduces.
- A dramatic color-changing or "precipitate" demo presented as proof your water is unsafe.
- No written test results, no model numbers, or vague answers about certification.
Certification details matter: ask for the exact NSF/ANSI standard and the listed contaminants for the model being installed, and check the listing on the certifier's website. No single system removes everything.
